david is my favorite bible character- the one after God’s own heart. i was in a bible study led by janie seivers w/ a bunch of people from church like two years ago. we went through the workbook david: seeking God’s heart by beth moore. it was great. i was behind like 3 chapters the entire time, but i finished the study on my own. i learned so much from that book! man, david really did screw up a few times, but the psalms he wrote make his heart transparent. he loved God. he really loved God. he knew when he did something wrong. and when he did something right, he knew it was because of God. reading the psalms he wrote when he was being pursued by saul was like reading his prayers during one of his greatest trials. in some of them, he sang and praised God so much. in others he started out distressed, discouraged, depressed, devoid of hope or joy, and alone. after a few minutes of his gloominess, there was a ‘but.’ “why is this going on? why isn’t life easier? why are my enemies being blessed?….. but i know you are sovereign, i know you are just, i know you are perfect, and i know you have your own timing.” not so long after his new revelation, david went back to praising God. that was the conclusion, every time that i can remember. no matter how far down david was, he looked up once, saw God, and was suddenly back out of the whole, closer to God than he was before. david was passionate, genuine, and sensitive. that’s another thing i thought was cool. he was sensitive. he cried a lot- that’s not necessarily a good thing i guess, but when david cried it was extreme. he mourned for absalom for a loooong time! when he rejoiced, it was impressive rejoicing. after he brought back the ark of the covenant he partied in the streets w/ his people, dancing around like a fool! he was so purely happy *happy sounds so weak* that he finally had the ark back that he left all self consciousness behind and praised God w/ his entire heart. there are a ton of amazing people in the bible, but i think i like/ admire david the most
